The Ministry of Foreign Affairs launched a fundraising campaign to assist Japan with recovery from the magnitude 7.1 earthquake in Kumamoto prefecture July 28.
The government has committed NT$5 million (US$155,000) in aid, and President Lai Ching-te, Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and Premier Cho Jung-tai have said they will each personally donate NT$200,000.
The Taipei City-based International Cooperation and Development Fund has also opened a special account that will accept donations from private citizens and civic organizations until the end of the month, the MOFA said.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung said that Taiwan always stands with Japan in times of need and urged all segments of society to convey Taiwan’s warmth through concrete actions that contribute to helping Kumamoto rebuild quickly. (POC-E)
