Deputy Minister of Digital Affairs Isabel Hou attended the Digital and Artificial Intelligence Ministerial Meeting held under the Asia-Pacific Economic Forum July 23-26 in Chengdu, China.
Themed “Digital and AI Technologies for Empowerment of an Asia-Pacific Community,” the meeting involved representatives from 21 APEC member states, and the subsequent joint statement issued July 23 outlined five major development goals.
According to the Ministry of Digital Affairs, the deputy minister brought her APEC counterparts up to speed on Taiwan’s policies and experience in developing AI infrastructure, cultivating talent and promoting open data.
During the four-day meeting, Hou introduced Taiwan’s digital ID wallet project, emphasizing that trust is the foundation of sustainable AI and digital development. She also cited government policies encouraging telecom companies to extend their services to remote areas as an example of the public and private sectors working together to enhance universal digital connectivity.
At the Data for Growth High-level Roundtable and the High-Level Forum on AI, Hou discussed the challenges of AI and digital development and the future direction of cooperation. Since Taiwan began promoting open data in 2012, the government has established a rich database that is available to the public and enterprises free of charge to create value and enhance social resilience, she added.
Coordinated effort by all parties of interest is necessary to develop digital and AI technologies, the deputy minister said. As a trusted partner, Taiwan looks forward to working with fellow APEC members to promote sustainable, resilient and inclusive digital development for the region, Hou added. (SFC-E)
