Five Taiwanese artists took part in the Expo Chicago held April 9-12 in the U.S. city, showcasing Taiwan’s vibrant artistic landscape on the global stage, according to the Ministry of Culture.
According to the MOC, the Taipei Cultural Center in New York and Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab jointly set up the Taiwan pavilion, which housed the “The Twilight State—Horizons of Taiwanese Contemporary Art” exhibition curated by Chuang Wei-tzu.
Centered on the concept of gaze, the exhibition featured works including paintings, videos and installations by artists Chen Ching-yuan, Chen Chen, Huang Li-hui, Li Yi-fan and Lin Yi-chi to explore perception, ambiguity and the shifting relationship between viewers and art.
The first three artists also attended an event to shed light on Taiwan’s artistic landscape for graduate students from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, while local curators Hsieh Feng-rong and Lin Yu-hsuan took part in the Curatorial Forum to engage with 60-plus international peers on current curatorial practices in Taiwan.
The MOC said the exhibition received glowing reviews from art professionals such as Expo Chicago Artistic Director Kate Sierzputowski; Raphael Fonseca, curator of the Taiwan exhibition at the upcoming 2026 Venice Biennale; Marko Gluhaich, senior editor of contemporary art magazine Frieze; and Jessica Cinel, VIP consultant for Frieze art fairs.
