Deputy Agriculture Minister Du Wen-chen led a delegation to the 11th Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Food Security Ministerial Meeting Aug. 25 in Hangzhou, China, underscoring government commitment to deepening cooperation with APEC members.
Speaking at the forum, Du noted that challenges such as extreme climate, natural disasters and supply chain suspension are becoming increasingly common. To tackle these threats, Taiwan actively leverages technologies including automation, artificial intelligence and data analysis to help farmers enhance management and production efficiency, she added.
The deputy minister also urged APEC to pay particular attention to the needs of farmers, fishing crews, micro-, small-, and medium-sized enterprises, as well as smallholder farmers, to ensure that producers of different scales can all enjoy the benefits of technological development, further advancing resilience and food security.
This year’s forum focused on utilizing digital technology to facilitate development, revitalize rural economy and safeguard food safety, the Ministry of Agriculture said. It resulted in the passing of Principles for Strengthening Food Systems Resilience in the APEC Region through Innovation and Digitalization, as well as the Joint Statement on the 11th APEC Food Security Ministerial Meeting.
The MOA said Taiwan will continue to strengthen collaboration with other economies in the region and share experiences in smart agriculture and resilient production to jointly forge more inclusive and sustainable food systems in the Asia-Pacific. (POC-E)
