The Executive Yuan staged a workshop on international human rights education cooperation May 18 in Taipei City, highlighting government commitment to advancing human rights literacy.
Prominent attendees at the workshop included Manfred Nowak, secretary general of the Global Campus of Human Rights, and representatives from the Ministry of Education and local universities, who exchanged views on collaboration between Taiwan’s institutes of higher education and international human rights networks, the EY said.
During the meeting, Minister without Portfolio Lin Ming-hsin and MOE Chief Secretary Lin Po-chiao witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Lee Yu-jiuan, director general of the MOE’s Department of International and Cross-Strait Education, and Nowak, the EY said, adding that the pact will facilitate institutionalized exchanges between domestic universities, GCHR and its reginal networks while enabling students, researchers and teachers to participate in short-term courses and research projects.
Lin noted that the cultivation of a human rights culture requires the joint participation of academic communities, educational systems and civil society. He stated that the EY would work together with the MOE and local universities to cultivate human rights talent with global vision and practical skills.
In response, Nowak said the world is currently experiencing democratic backsliding and an intensifying social divide, challenging the international order based on international peace and security, development and prosperity, and human rights and human dignity. He emphasized that it is more vital than ever to educate young generations about the importance of respecting human rights.
GCHR, a major human rights educational institution, has long promoted human rights research, teaching and transregional exchange, the EY added. (POC-E)
