The “Building Resilient Democracies: Responding to Transnational Repression” workshop kicked off June 23 in Taipei City under the Global Cooperation Training Framework.

The three-day event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice and representative offices of Australia, Canada, Japan, the U.K. and the U.S. It involves experts, law enforcement officials and nongovernmental organization representatives from 29 countries, the MOFA said.

President Lai Ching-te said in his opening remarks that transnational repression has become a hybrid challenge for democracies around the world. No country is immune to the threat or can address the situation alone, he added.

The government will continue to enhance response measures spanning prevention, protection and sanctions to support victims, the president said, adding that Taiwan remains committed to working with the EU and other like-minded partners to contribute to global peace and prosperity.

Marie-Louise Hanna, executive director of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, commended Taiwan for its achievements in promoting democratic resilience and civic engagement. She called for expanded cooperation and exchanges among democratic partners to tackle challenges brought about by transnational repression and emerging technologies.

The MOFA said participants will focus discussions on how authoritarian regimes are using digital technologies, such as deepfakes and spyware, disinformation, and cross-border coercion to influence democracies around the world. They will also share their respective legal frameworks, law enforcement cooperation and victim protection measures. (SFC-E)
