The 2026 Taiwan-Sweden Trade Talks were held May 21 in Taipei City, with the two partners pledging to continue deepening economic ties, the Ministry of Economic Affairs said.

Jointly hosted by Deputy MOEA Minister Cynthia Kiang and Diana Janse, state secretary to Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade of Sweden, the event involved discussions in areas spanning artificial intelligence technology, energy policy and green transformation, 6G and next-generation communications and smart medical care.

Kiang said that the two governments continue to strengthen ongoing industrial and technological cooperation. She shared Taiwan’s economic growth rate forecast by the International Monetary Fund showing 5.2 percent in 2026, while elaborating on Taiwan’s strategies in response to geopolitical changes and expressing the country’s goal of establishing reliable cooperative partnerships with like-minded countries.

Sweden is an important economic and trade partner of Taiwan, with bilateral trade growing by 41 percent over the past decade, Kiang said. The countries both enjoy complementary industries, the deputy minister noted, citing Taiwan’s information and communications technology sector and Sweden’s wireless communication industry. She added that Swedish enterprises like IKEA have established long-standing relationships with Taiwanese industries and that Swedish enterprises were invited to attend Computex 2026 taking place June in Taipei.

Janse praised Taiwan’s leading position in the global semiconductor industry and the resilience of Taiwan’s economy when it faced the COVID-19 pandemic and other geopolitical challenges. She further shared her opinions on the current international political and economic situation, economic security, and issues regarding the World Trade Organization.

Following the talks, the two officials attended the 42nd Taiwan-Sweden Joint Business Council Meeting on the same day in Taipei. Kiang said that the government will strengthen Taiwan’s competitiveness by boosting key technology development and industrial upgrading as well as fostering digital and net-zero transformation through the Five Trusted Industry Sectors initiative and the Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects. She added that the country hopes to incorporate Sweden’s advantages in innovation and create more cooperative opportunities.

Official statistics show two-way trade totaled approximately US$1.49 billion in 2025, up from the prior year. Sweden is Taiwan’s second largest trading partner and source of foreign investment in Northern Europe, with its investment in Taiwan totaling US$668 million as of April. (YCH-E)
