A total of 332 cruise ships docked in Taiwan and brought in around 628,600 visitor arrivals during the first half of 2026, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications Aug. 21.
The MOTC expects the respective numbers to rise to 605 ships and 1.2 million arrivals for the whole year, marking new record highs.
Around 20 international cruise ships will make their maiden calls in Taiwan in the second half of the year, including the Ritz-Carlton’s Luminara, Peace Boat’s Pacific World and Noble Caledonia’s Island Sky, the ministry added.
The MOTC attributed the impressive numbers to continuous efforts to advance infrastructure development and enhance the global competitiveness of Taiwan’s major ports.
As the main cruise hub of Taiwan, Keelung Port is expected to draw in a record 1 million cruise visitors this year, thanks to the expanding presence of major cruise lines such as StarCruises and MSC Cruises, the ministry said.
In addition to its strong standing in global rankings such as the World Bank Container Port Performance Index and the DNV ratings, the Port of Kaohsiung is gaining recognition as a major cruise destination, the MOTC said, adding that Taichung, Penghu and Hualien ports are also establishing cruise and maritime tourism.
Other major development projects include installing smart detection systems to improve security management and disaster prevention and response, as well as continuous green energy infrastructure development to promote the net-zero transition, the MOTC said. (SFC-E)
