The “Chronicles of Stone and Feather: A Taiwanese Contemporary Art Duo” exhibition is set to kick off June 24 at Royal Botanical Garden-CSIC in Madrid, Spain, underscoring Taiwan’s vibrant artistic landscape.

Organized by the Cultural Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Spain and Royal Botanical Garden-CSIC with support from the Ministry of Culture, the event features over 50 works by Taiwanese artists Mia Liu and Teng Pu-chun. Liu and exhibition curator Audrey Chi-wen Tu will attend the opening ceremony to share their creative concepts and artistic practices with European audiences, the MOC said.

According to the ministry, both artists are inspired by Taiwan’s mountainous landscape, with Teng using ink dots to depict the solidness of rocks and Liu utilizing paper to portray the lightness of feathers in flight. The event will explore how Taiwanese contemporary artists engage in cross-cultural dialogue through ink, photography, installation and paint while showcasing Taiwan’s evolving aesthetic identity amid globalization, the ministry said.

The TECO in Spain has been promoting exchanges and cooperation with Spanish arts and cultural institutions since its establishment in 2015, the MOC said. The event running until Aug. 30 is the largest-ever Taiwanese visual arts exhibition held in Spain, the ministry noted, adding that the exhibition, along with seminars and guided tours held during the event, is expected to attract more than 40,000 visitors.

Born in 1957, Teng is famous for his distinctive textural strokes and has exhibited works in Beijing, Hong Kong and New York City. Liu was born in 1980, and her works exploring the poetry of everyday life have been displayed in Budapest, Sydney and the Netherlands. (YCH-E)
