Taiwanese startups won one first-place, three second-place and one third-place prizes at SelectUSA Tech pitching sessions May 4 in National Harbor, Maryland, demonstrating the local sector’s vibrant technological prowess and commercial application capabilities.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs Small and Medium Enterprise and Startup Administration, eight local startups were ranked among the top eight in various categories, with five competing against finalists from around the world. This is the best result among all participating nations and brings recognition for the robust local startup ecosystem.
Among the winners, MegaPro Biomedical Co. Ltd. came in first in the Health session and will go on to compete for the grand prize against other winners. A spinoff from the government-sponsored Industrial Technology Research Institute, MegaPro developed a GPS-like tracking system for cell therapies.
Black Solution Nanotech Co. Ltd. and VoltaSphere Technology Inc. took second places in the Defense and Energy sessions, respectively, while United Kaohsiung AI Medical Technology and LongLink Solutions Co. Ltd. won second and third places in the Open session.
Economic Affairs Minister Kung Ming-hsin said this marked the third year in a row that Taiwan has fielded the largest number of shortlisted teams in pitching sessions, reflecting success of government promotion.
To strengthen trade and economic ties between Taiwan and the U.S., the SMEA staged a Taiwan Startup Night on the sidelines of SelectUSA. The event involved around 100 officials and business executives from the greater Washington D.C. area, including American Institute in Taiwan Director Raymond Greene. (SFC-E)
