Team Taiwan wraps up 2024 Paris Olympics

Team Taiwan concluded its 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris with two gold and five bronze medals from the world’s most important sporting event, the Ministry of Education Sports Administration said Aug. 13.

After taking part in the closing ceremony in Paris, the last group of Taiwan athletes returned home in the early hours of Aug. 13. Following a precedent set at the Tokyo Olympics, three Air Force F-16V fighter jets escorted the athletes’ plane and released decoy flares as the airplane entered Taiwan air space, the Presidential Office added.

According to the SA, the results are the second-best in Taiwan’s Olympic history and much appreciated by the government and people. The gold in women’s 57kg boxing won by Lin Yu-ting on the last day of the games is especially inspiring amidst the malicious attacks on her, the agency said.

The SA said the government had fully assisted in preparing and supporting Taiwan athletes for and during the quadrennial event, citing inter-agency cooperation to establish a support station in Paris, the first of its kind for a sporting event. The warm assistance by the Taipei Representative Office in France was especially appreciated, the SA added.

As a token of appreciation, President Lai Ching-te will host an “Our Heroes! Team Taiwan” party at the PO Aug. 16 in Taipei City. The athletes will take part in a parade around the city later in the day, the PO said, inviting the public to join the celebration and adding that the event will be streamlined on various social media platforms.
