The synchrotron will allow scientists probe matter at atomic scale, from drugs and metals to meteorite traces
Russia’s latest megascience undertaking lies not far from the river Ob, south of Novosibirsk in Russia’s Siberia, some 3,000km east of Moscow. The Siberian Ring Photon Source (SKIF) synchrotron complex is effectively an ultra-powerful X-ray microscope for research ranging from medicine and chemistry to metallurgy and geology.
RT has been granted access to SKIF, Russia’s state-of-the-art megascience project built to let scientists examine matter at the atomic scale.
SKIF was officially unveiled by Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier this month. At the time, he said that the opening was postponed from 2024 because foreign suppliers failed to deliver some equipment due to Western sanctions, forcing Russian teams to reproduce key components domestically. Now, the first research stations are expected to enter operation before year-end.
The construction of the nearly $600 million facility began in 2021, becoming one of Russia’s most expensive scientific projects. As for its principles, the device accelerates electrons to almost the speed of light and sends them around a 476-meter storage ring, where magnets bend their path and make them give off extremely bright radiation. Scientists can then select the part of that radiation they need, from infrared through hard X-rays, and aim it at a sample.
The scientists can then watch a chemical reaction as it happens, studying how metals behave under shock waves, examining proteins and medicines, or looking inside archaeological objects without cutting them open. The method is also expected to drastically reduce the development time for new materials, pharmaceuticals, and cancer drugs.
“The emission that the source creates is well suited to studying the atomic or molecular structure of a compound… It’s viruses, medicine, bone fractures, aircraft engine, turbines, chemical reactions, high-speed processes. Indeed, it’s useful to everyone,” SKIF Director Evgeny Levichev told RT.
One of the upcoming experiments will examine titanium-based catalysts used to produce ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene, while other planned work includes studying difficult-to-extract gold and searching lake sediments near the site of the 1908 Tunguska event for possible extraterrestrial particles.
