Vice Foreign Minister Ger Bau-shuan said he hoped to work together with Guatemala and other democratic partners to jointly advance regional peace, stability and prosperity.
Ger made the remarks while attending an event marking the Central American ally’s 205th Independence Day Sept. 10 in Taipei City, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In his remarks, the vice foreign minister noted that Taiwan and Guatemala both went through tumultuous times in pursuit of democracy. He added that the two sides enjoy close economic, infrastructure, public health and trade collaboration, citing Taiwan’s assistance in establishing Guatemala’s first public cancer hospital and a care center for disabled children and youth and modernizing La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City, as well as its support for the allied nation’s Chip Road Project.
In response, Guatemalan Ambassador to the ROC (Taiwan) Luis Raúl Estévez López said that the two countries have cooperated in a wide range of areas including culture, education, national defense and politics. He added that Guatemala’s backing of Taiwan’s international participation underscores the strength of the 92-year bilateral relationship and voiced appreciation for Taiwan’s help in advancing Guatemala’s economic transformation.
Under its integrated diplomacy framework and Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project, Taiwan will continue expanding cooperation with Guatemala to achieve mutual prosperity, the ministry concluded. (POC-E)
