A solo exhibition “Ubiquitous Ghosts” is on until Aug. 2 in Washington DC, according to the Ministry of Culture. The exhibition, organized by the Taiwan Representative Office in the U.S. Cultural Division, the Taiwan Academy and the IA&A gallery at Hillyer, showcases work by Virtual Reality artist, Tao Ya-lun.

It is Tao’s first solo VR exhibit in the U.S., and the first such exhibit held at the gallery. Curated by Johns Hopkins University History of Art assistant professor Mia Yingxing Liu, pieces include “Wandering Ghost No. 9 and 10.”

The “Wandering Ghost” series centers on political ideology and consumer culture in contemporary society. Anther piece, “1111 project,” focuses on a person displaced through the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the MOC said. Tao stated that he uses digital media to explore human rights and politics.

The exhibition is accompanied by other events including a conversation between Tao and Liu July 11, and a seminar July 18, bringing artists, commentators and technology professionals together to a discussion on the evolution and future of artificial intelligence and VR.

The Taiwan Academy was established by the MOC in 2011 as a non-profit public institute to promote research on Taiwan-related topics. It creates events such as dialogues between artists, curators and venues to raise the country’s international profile. (POC-E)
