Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim and her delegation arrived in Palau June 6 to kick off her five-day visit to the Pacific ally, according to the Presidential Office.

Upon arrival, Hsiao was greeted on board the plane by Vice President Raynold Oilouch and Taiwanese Amb. Andy Kang-i Chen and then saluted by a police honor guard at the airport before visiting the Asahi Baseball Field to cheer on the Taiwanese team currently participating in a friendly Taiwan-Palau baseball series.

The following day, the vice president was accompanied by President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. to Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Peleliu Island to experience the ally’s rich marine ecology. The PO said Japanese Amb. to Palau Kenichi Kasahara also joined the duo for rafting and snorkeling.

Later in the evening, Hsiao and her delegation attended a welcome banquet hosted by Whipps. Also at the event were key Palauan political figures and tribal leaders, as well as the ambassadors of Australia and Japan.

Hsiao thanked the ally for its hospitality and support on behalf of the government and people of Taiwan. She said her mission included expanding the bilateral friendship, encouraging more Taiwanese tourists to visit Palau and examining the results of two-way cooperative projects.

The vice president said the vast Pacific Ocean is not a gap separating Taiwan and Palau, but a link bonding the two closely together, adding that the two like-minded partners also share the values of freedom and democracy and commitment to environmental preservation.

She said Taiwan and Palau are both indispensable forces for good in the international community, expressing hope that bilateral ties will continue to thrive and that cooperative projects will proceed apace. (SFC-E)
