Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim met with President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. and called on the National Congress June 8 on the third day of her “Palau Prosperity Project” visit to the Pacific ally.

According to the Presidential Office, Hsiao and the Whipps exchanged views on bilateral cooperation in areas such as agriculture and fisheries, clean energy, medicine and public health, public infrastructure, security and technology applications.

While calling on the National Congress, the vice president said Taiwan and Palau are both ocean nations, share Austronesian cultural connections, cherish freedom and democracy, and respect the rule of law and human dignity. The two partners have also demonstrated that nations of different sizes can make meaningful contributions to the world, she added.

She thanked the National Congress and the people and government of Palau for consistently supporting Taiwan’s international participation, adding that Taiwan will continue to work with Palau to ensure a democratic, free, peaceful and prosperous Pacific for future generations.

Hsiao also announced that the Taiwanese Ministry of Justice’s Investigation Bureau will dispatch personnel to Palau and work closely with the local authorities to address growing challenges posed by transnational crime. Following her remarks, the vice president and Whipps witnessed the donation to Palau of four drones made in Taiwan.

While attending an event celebrating the completion of a Taiwan-funded road paving project in Ngchesar, Hsiao said roads constructed with contributions from Taiwan now account for 68 percent of Palau’s land transportation network. She added that Taiwan will keep working with the Palauan government to complete the major interstate road network on Babeldaob by 2028.

The vice president also traveled to a farm operated by Taiwan Technical Mission for briefings on the results of bilateral agricultural development projects, the PO said. (SFC-E)
