Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim said July 16 that Taiwan is committed to deepening partnerships with Estonia in areas spanning security, technology and trade, based on the two sides’ increasingly close relationship.

Hsiao made the remarks when meeting with an Estonian parliamentary delegation at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The group included Kristo Enn Vaga, chair of the Estonia-Taiwan Support Group; Peeter Tali, chair of the EU Affairs Committee of the Parliament, or the Riigikogu; and lawmakers Kalle Laanet and Anti Poolamets.

Taiwan and Estonia enjoy growing relationships in many aspects, and the two countries have much in common despite their geographical distance, Hsiao said. The two both face pressure from vast and aggressive neighbors and confront challenges of cybersecurity, democratic resilience, border security, and how to implement a democratic society amid complex geopolitics, she added.

According to the vice president, Estonia is a highly innovative and resilient nation, the latter being a quality that Taiwan also places great value on. Taiwan believes that resilience stems from the process of overcoming numerous obstacles and hardships, coupled with the ability to surmount difficulties quickly and bounce back, Hsiao said, adding that this demonstrates a spirit common to the people of both countries.

Hsiao concluded by saying that she believes Estonia’s spirit of innovation will serve as a vital foundation for cooperation and solid partnerships. (YCH-E)
