Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim received international guests set to attend the annual forum organized by Taipei City-based Research Institute for Democracy, Society and Emerging Technology (DSET) June 5 at the Presidential Office, pledging to promote technological innovation, industrial development and democratic resilience while deepening international cooperation.

Titled “National Strategic Summit on Supply Chain Resilience,” the forum took place June 6 in Taipei and focused on collaboration between Taiwan and international partners in areas spanning artificial intelligence, semiconductors, robotics, energy security and non-red drone supply chains.

According to Hsiao, the government is implementing policies such as the Ten Major AI Infrastructure Projects to foster forward-looking technological research and establish infrastructure to advance computing power. It is applying technological achievements to more industries and social sectors, especially traditional and micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, she said, adding that although some traditional industries are not directly involved in AI development, they are set to be included in a broader national security and industrial development system.

The development of drones and unmanned systems is another priority, Hsiao said, adding that the government has paid great attention to their potential for both military and civilian use. Taiwan’s drone industry has grown into an ecosystem encompassing hundreds of companies, the vice president noted, expressing hope of gaining more support for the special national defense budget bill to further boost the industry.

Hsiao said that most Taiwanese people agree with enhancing self-defense capabilities and increasing national defense spending. The government will continue to prioritize backing local industries to establish domestic development capabilities for unmanned land, sea and air systems, she added.

The vice president concluded by thanking the guests for visiting Taiwan to exchange views on future technology and security development. (YCH-E)
