Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait as she received a delegation from the Council on Foreign Relations at the Presidential Office April 15 in Taipei City.
 
According to the vice president, Taiwan-U.S. economic relations has undergone structural changes in the past few years, marked by increasingly closer cooperation on investment, trade and industrial partnership. She added that despite global uncertainties such as tariff challenges, Taiwan’s gross domestic product surged 8.68 percent in 2025, an impressive and exciting achievement among developed countries.
 
Hsiao said Taiwan’s industrial prowess centers around semiconductors and hardware production capabilities essential for global artificial intelligence development. She further said that President Lai Ching-te has the vision to transform Taiwan into an asset management hub in Asia with the capacity to integrate AI with a wide variety of industries to benefit society as a whole.
 
The vice president said that the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war is a reminder that peace can never be taken for granted. In accordance with the government’s firm belief in peace through strength, Hsiao said Taiwan’s defense budget will reach 3 percent of its gross domestic product this year and 5 percent by 2030, adding the budget includes reforms and development of asymmetric combat capabilities to avoid confrontation and ensure cross-strait peace and stability.
 
Hsiao thanked the New York City-based think tank for the visit and the opportunity to discuss issues of mutual concern. She also reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to expanding its global participation and sharing its success in empowering women and promoting small- and medium-sized businesses. (SFC-E)
