The Russian, who spent years behind bars in the US, was exchanged for basketball player Brittney Griner
Russian businessman Viktor Bout returned to his home country this week following a major prisoner swap with the US. Having spent more than a decade in American custody, he sat down for an exclusive interview with RT’s Maria Butina, TV host and former gun rights advocate, who also served a prison term in the US.
In total, Bout spent more than 14 years behind bars, of which more than 12 were in US prisons, as part of a 25-year sentence stemming from arms-trafficking charges – which he always denied. He was taken into custody in 2008 during an American sting operation in Thailand, and sentenced by a US court in 2012. The Russian national was exchanged for basketball star Brittney Griner, who was sentenced in August to nine years in a Russian penal colony for drug trafficking.
