Kavala: An Antonov An 12 cargo aircraft crashed in Northern Greece on Saturday. The incident took place near Paleochori Kavalas in the northern part of the country, reported Athens News Agency. Till now, there are no immediate reports of any casualties in the crash.
Seven fire engines reached the spot, while, 15 firefighters had been deployed to the crash site. As per the reports, the aircraft caught fire in midair and locals heard a loud sound when it crashed. The aircraft was owned by a Ukrainian company and was reportedly carrying weapons for the war-torn country. It was operated by Meridian Air Cargo.
The cargo aircraft was travelling from Serbia to Jordan. Due to a technical glitch, the pilot of the plane had asked for an emergency landing at nearby Kavala airport. However, it crashed before reaching there. The reason of the crash is not known yet.
Earlier this week also, a helicopter crashed on the island of Samos in Greece. The incident took place on Wednesday, i.e. July 13. There were reportedly four people onboard the Soviet-made Mil Mi-8 medium twin-turbine helicopter. Out of them, two were killed in the crash, while the remaining two were seriously injured.
Apart from the Romanian pilot, two Moldovan operators, and a Greek liaison translator were there on the helicopter. In the helicopter crash, one of the operators and the Greek translator were killed. The helicopter crashed on the island’s western coast.
