The Ministry of Environment hosted a meeting on building resilient, greener cities Nov. 3 in Taipei City, underscoring Taiwan’s commitment to working with Japan to promote sustainability.

Environment Minister Peng Chi-ming and Kumamoto prefecture Vice Governor Naotaka Kamezaki said at the event that they will continue to join forces in climate adaptation, urban greening and tree protection, the MOENV said.

Peng noted that owing to extreme climate shifts, the government is actively planning a six-year urban forest project that will leverage scientific methods to enhance public security and reduce temperatures in cities. Kamezaki said that urban greening takes into account local environmental conditions and plant qualities, and requires long-term planning.

The MOENV proposed three streams of future cooperation with Kumamoto. The first deepens professional technical exchange by introducing the prefecture’s tree health management and maintenance techniques in Taiwan. The second is focused on promoting collaboration on demonstration sites and devising modes suitable for Taiwan’s urban environment, while the third will see governments work together on smart management by building tree information databases and conducting health monitoring.
