Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung hosted a banquet for a five-member delegation led by Paraguay Minister of Public Health and Social Welfare Isaías Ricardo Fretes Nov. 2 in Taipei City.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin welcomed Fretes on his first trip to Taiwan. The minister recalled his visit to the allied nation in July of last year to better understand bilateral public health initiatives, including the Health Information Management Efficiency Enhancement Project and the construction of a general hospital in Asuncion.

Lin lauded the health information management system’s coverage of around 90 percent of the ally’s health facilities, adding that the Taiwanese government is promoting cooperation between the two countries’ major hospitals.

The minister also thanked the government of Paraguay for expressing unwavering support for Taiwan at various international venues. In particular, Lin said President Santiago Peña’s powerful speech at this year’s U.N. General Assembly demonstrated the strong ties between the two nations.

In response, Fretes thanked Taiwan for its long-standing assistance with modernizing his country’s public health system and commended Taiwan’s development in smart healthcare, infectious disease prevention and national health insurance.

Taiwan and Paraguay have been friends through various development challenges, demonstrating the sincerity of the bond, he said. The minister also expressed hope of learning from Taiwan’s medical system, facility management and operational experience to expand exchanges in talent cultivation and other key areas.

During its Nov. 1-5 stay, the group also called on the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the International Cooperation and Development Fund (TaiwanICDF) and medical institutions including National Taiwan University Hospital and Taipei Veterans General Hospital, the MOFA said. (SFC-E)
