Japan and Canada sanction Russia after US over Ukraine tensions, more to come

TOKYO: Japan imposes sanctions on Russia for its actions in Ukraine, including banning the issuance of Russian bonds in Japan and suspending the assets of certain Russian citizens, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Wednesday (Feb 23).

Western nations on Tuesday imposed new sanctions on Russian banks and private individuals after Moscow ordered troops to various parts of eastern Ukraine.

Kishida said Russia’s actions violated Ukrainian sovereignty and called on Russia to return to talks with officials. Japan was determined to take further steps if the situation worsened, he said.

He said he did not see a major impact on electricity supply in the short term and would consider all possible ways to reduce the impact on homes and companies in the event of oil prices rising.

Japanese markets closed on Wednesday for a national holiday.
