UK Trans-women Isla Bryson jailed for 8 years over rape charges

A transgender woman who sparked controversy after being jailed in an all-female prison for rape was jailed for eight years by a Scottish court on Tuesday.

Isla Bryson was convicted of raping two women in 2016 and 2019 when she was a man named Adam Graham, who prosecutors said was linked to the murder of the vulnerable victim.

She was initially held at Cornton Vale Women’s Prison in the Scottish capital, before the Scottish government confirmed Bryson would be transferred after campaigners, politicians and UN human rights experts raised concerns about the safety of other prisoners.

“It is clear that you pose a particular risk to women with whom you have relationships,” Judge Lord Scott said as he handed down the prison sentence at Edinburgh High Court.

The article about Bryson comes weeks after the Scottish Parliament passed legislation to make it easier for people to change their legal gender, and some women’s rights campaigners suggested that predatory men could use it to gain access to the same space. bathroom.

The UK government has since said it will block the change to the law because it would affect equality issues elsewhere in the country.

Nicola Sturgeon has announced she will step down as Scotland’s first minister after nearly a decade in power, suggesting she is deeply divided over the issue.
