Former Haryana Governor Dhanik Lal Mandal Passes Away

Chandigarh: Former Haryana Governor and former Bihar Legislative Assembly Speaker Dhanik Lal Mandal passed away at the age of 90 in Chandigarh.


Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya and Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar paid tributes to Mr. Mandal, who died on Sunday.

“Deeply saddened by the demise of former Haryana Governor Shri Dhanik Lal Mandal Ji. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved, friends, and admirers! May God grant the departed soul eternal peace. Om Shanti,” Mr. Dattatreya tweeted.

Chief Minister Khattar said Mr. Mandal will always be remembered as an able politician, administrator, and social worker.

“Very sad to hear about the passing away of former Haryana Governor Shri Dhanik Lal Mandal Ji,” Khattar said in a tweet in Hindi.

Mr. Mandal served as the Governor of Haryana from 1990 to 1995.

In a tweet, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also condoled the demise of the socialist leader, who was also the former Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly.

Mr. Kumar described Mr. Mandal’s death as an irreparable loss to society and Indian politics and a personal loss to him.

Mandal’s last rites will be performed with state honors, Kumar said.

Born on 30 March 1932 at Belha in Madhubani, Bihar, Mr. Mandal was elected to the Bihar Assembly thrice in 1967, 1969, and 1972. In 1967, he was the Speaker of the Bihar Assembly.

Mr. Mandal was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1977 and served as Minister of State for Home Affairs till January 1980. He was elected to the Lok Sabha for the second time in 1980.
