External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar delivered the opening remarks at the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, emphasising the significant role of the Indian diaspora in nation-building and the government’s efforts to create a safety net for Indians living abroad.
Jaishankar described the event as a “family reunion,” highlighting how Indians abroad are not only able to witness the progress India is making but also take pride in their own achievements.
He stated, “In a globalized era, the diaspora only becomes more important with each passing year,” underscoring the valuable contributions of the diaspora in areas such as technology, trade, tourism, and investment.
Addressing the government’s initiatives, Jaishankar emphasized that India’s people-centric changes benefit the diaspora through enhancements in ease of doing business, connectivity, and travel. He also highlighted improvements in passport services, consular assistance, and grievance platforms, ensuring the well-being of Indians abroad.
Jaishankar reassured the diaspora, stating, “In times of difficulties, you can be confident that the Modi Sarkar has your back.” He also praised Odisha’s historical significance in India’s external engagements, pointing out the connection between the ancient Bali Yatra and modern policies like the Act East Policy.
He pointed out that despite global challenges, India remains confident, modernizing, and inclusive, where tradition and technology coexist. He urged the diaspora to contribute towards the vision of achieving a Viksit Bharat or the Developed India.
The 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention, themed “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat,” is being organized in collaboration with the State Government of Odisha from January 8 to 10 in Bhubaneswar. Over 50 countries are represented at this flagship event, which serves as a platform for Indian diaspora members to connect and contribute to India’s growth trajectory.
