Water tanks, painted saffron in UP, Samajwadi Party sparks communalism angle

Moradabad: Seven water tanks, under Nagar Nigam, are painted with pictures of men on horseback, holding saffron-colored flags representing Indian culture.

Samajwadi Party Councilor Shiri Gul said, “It is a deliberate attempt to intimidate a particular community. We will take the matter to the Municipal Commissioner and the District Magistrate.”

Vinod Agarwal, mayor of Moradabad, said, “The tanks were dirty and needed a new coat of paint. There is nothing wrong with saffron color. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Rani Lakshmi Bai also used saffron flags. We are working to improve the community, but when people have problems, they have to be fixed. ”

The district commissioner, T.N. Mishra, responding to the matter, said, “The paintings show the security guards of the democracy and the republic.”

He confirmed that seven water tanks were painted under the project before polling day, including those at Pilot, Jigar Colony and MDA Park. Although there was no comment from the municipal commissioner on the matter, the official said “the uniform color, bright pink, was used under the government’s Smart City Project.”

Shailendra Kumar Singh, the district magistrate, said no one had approached him about the matter.

“If there are any complaints in the future, we will have discussions with the mayor and find a solution,” he said.
