Deputy Foreign Minister François Chih-chung Wu attended a reception celebrating the 35th Somaliland National Day May 18 in Taipei City, underscoring the government’s commitment to two-way ties, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Speaking at the event organized by the Republic of Somaliland Representative Office in Taiwan, Wu thanked the African country for staunchly supporting the bilateral relationship. He added that Taiwan and Somaliland are both regional models of democratic development that value freedom and the rule of law.

According to Wu, since mutually establishing representative offices in 2020, the two countries have continued to deepen cooperation in areas spanning coast patrol, economy, energy, humanitarian assistance, information and communications technology, medical care, talent cultivation, and trade to enhance the peoples’ welfare. He cited as examples Taiwan’s provision of 288 metric tons of rice to Somaliland last year and the launch of Taiwan Avenue in Somaliland’s capital, Hargeisa, last July.

Somaliland office Representative Mahmoud Adam Jama Galaal said that following 35 years of development, the country has become a democratic model in the Horn of Africa. Taiwan and Somaliland enjoy a constructive partnership based on mutual respect and shared values, he said, praising the two countries’ strong self-identities, fearlessness and unyielding spirits.

After their remarks, the two officials jointly wished the countries long-lasting friendship and partnership.

Amid the volatile global situation, the MOFA said that it will continue to work closely with the Somaliland government under the integrated diplomacy initiative’s three pillars of democracy, peace and prosperity to drive the sustainable development of both sides. (YCH-E)
