Deputy Foreign Minister Chen Ming-chi hosted a luncheon for Osmond Martinez, Belizean minister of state at the Ministry of Economic Transformation, and Carlos Pol, the ministry’s chief executive officer, July 29 in Taipei City, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Chen praised Martinez for actively implementing Prime Minister John Briceño’s policies, including debt-for-nature Blue Bonds, which aim to enhance the ally’s fiscal structure and strengthen its economic resilience. The deputy minister emphasized that the 37-year diplomatic relationship between Taiwan and Belize is based on the shared values of freedom, democracy and respect for human rights and expressed appreciation for Belize’s long-standing support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.
Taiwan is committed to working with Belize to expand cooperative projects spanning carbon credits, electric buses, medical care, public health, smart agriculture, sustainable tourism and talent cultivation, Chen said, adding that the country will continue to help boost the Central American ally’s national competitiveness and sustainable development to enhance the well-being of the people on both sides.
In response, Martinez thanked Taiwan for its long-term, across-the-board national development assistance and reaffirmed that Taiwan is Belize’s most important and trusted partner. He anticipated continuing to deepen bilateral economic, investment and trade ties while expanding diverse exchanges to create opportunities for mutual benefit and shared prosperity.
High-level officials and staff from the Ministries of Agriculture, Environment and Finance; Taipei-based Export-Import Bank of the R.O.C. (Taiwan); the International Cooperation and Development Fund; and the Latin American and Caribbean Trade Office also attended the event. The participants exchanged views on issues including multilateral cooperation within the Central American Bank for Economic Integration, financial mutual assistance mechanisms and the exploration of trade and business opportunities.
