Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs François Chih-chung Wu said that Taiwan is committed to expanding cooperation with Europe to jointly respond to global security challenges.

Wu made the remarks in an online interview June 2 from Taipei City with Giulia Pompili for an article published June 3 in the Italian daily newspaper Il Foglio, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to Wu, Taiwan has continued to expand trade cooperation with like-minded partners such as Europe, Japan and the U.S. in recent years, as evidenced by the major investment projects by Taiwanese firms in France, Germany and Italy.

Given Taiwan’s robust economic performance, vibrant democratic institutions and key role in the global semiconductor and high-tech sectors, it is in the interest of Taiwan and partner countries to continue expanding bilateral relations, he added.

The deputy minister said that Taiwan has observed the importance of drones in modern defense systems from the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and is learning from Ukraine how to develop the local drone sector.

Regarding reports that Ukraine has expressed concern over components and parts from Taiwan found in Russian drones, Wu reiterated that Taiwan has always abided by the export control regulations stipulated by the EU and the U.S. The deputy minister said the government looks forward to discussing the issue with Ukraine to prevent sensitive components and parts from falling into the hands of Russia.

Wu stressed that Taiwan will continue to support Ukraine while enhancing cooperation with like-minded countries to strengthen the resilience of democratic partners around the world. (SFC-E)
