Minister of Foreign Affairs Lin Chia-lung said Taiwan is the U.S.’ most trusted artificial intelligence supply chain partner and that the U.S. needs Taiwan if it is to maintain or establish advantage in different strata of the global AI industry and win the race with China.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the minister made the remarks in an op-ed titled “America’s AI Ambitions Depend on Taiwan” published Nov. 3 in Foreign Affairs.

Lin said Taiwan and the U.S. have built a mutually reinforcing AI partnership that underpins U.S. leadership in the sector. Taiwan’s semiconductor sector was not built at the expense of the U.S. but was instead forged through decades of collaboration, mutual trust and a division of labor between the two countries, he added.

In addition to semiconductor manufacturing, Taiwan’s AI server production capabilities enable U.S.-designed AI chips and platforms to be deployed rapidly and at scale, the minister added.

As the global AI race intensifies, it will also become a contest over values, data management and trust, Lin said. If the U.S. and its democratic partners want to stay ahead in technology, the minister urged them to work together to create secure and trustworthy AI ecosystems that reflect their principles.

As two examples in this regard, he cited the U.S.-Taiwan Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue since 2020 and the global semiconductor democratic supply chain partnership initiative proposed by Taiwan in 2025 to jointly construct reliable systems that can withstand international disruptions.

The minister concluded by reaffirming that Taiwan is not an adversary, but the most trustworthy partner the U.S. has in AI and a force multiplier in the global industry. (SFC-E)
