French artist and writer Charlotte Mounier hosted a workshop Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at New Taipei City-based National Human Rights Museum’s Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park, according to the Ministry of Culture.

The event was the result of a cooperative agreement inked by NHRM and the French Office in Taipei in 2024 that established the Villa Formose project. Mounier, the second French writer recommended by the office to become an artist-in-residence in Taiwan under the program, has conducted research at both the museum’s Green Island location and Jing-Mei White Terror Memorial Park since September, the MOC said.

Mounier’s work incorporates contemporary art theory research, sight and sound creation, and co-creation to engage audiences in the artistic process. She also designed an inclusive guide called Les Surfaces Sonores that enables visually impaired individuals to gain insight into artistic collections through sound, the ministry added.

During the workshop, Mounier introduced content calling for elections, freedom of speech, human rights laws and social justice from Formosa Magazine and other opposition publications during the White Terror, which refers to the suppression and prosecution of political dissidents under martial law from 1949 to 1992. She also invited attendees to make recordings of themselves reading magazine excerpts to spark reflection on authoritarianism, the MOC said. (POC-E)
