Five Taiwanese short films are in international competition for four awards at the 2026 Festival Phare Arles taking place July 27-31 in France, according to the Ministry of Culture.
With support from the Taiwan Cultural Center in Paris, the 12th edition of the festival focuses on Taiwan and features the animation “The Egret River” on festival posters and other publicity materials.
TCCP Director Chen Hung-hsing said the center engages with major arts festivals and mainstream performance platforms in southern France to raise Taiwanese artists’ profiles. Working together with the Arles festival for the first time this year, the event features five works that spotlight the country’s cultural diversity and depth for French audiences, he added.
According to the MOC, the festival opened with a special screening of four of the five short films at the oldest cinema in France, the Eden Cinéma, founded in 1919. These were “The Egret River” directed by Liu Wan-ling; “Amateur in the Moon,” an experimental documentary directed by Lin Chun-ni and Huang Pang-chuan; “/her/ – Island, Fog, God of Dreams” directed by Lin Yi-chi; and 2022 Best Short Film Golden Horse winner, “Can You Hear Me?” directed by Li Nien-hsiu.
The fifth film, 2025 Golden Horse Award for Best Animated Short film “Praying Mantis” directed by Joe Hsieh, will screen at the Argo Roman Theatre July 30. The director will also attend the event for an audience discussion session, the MOC said. (SFC-E)
