The Ministry of Economic Affairs announced Jan. 2 new energy-saving goals and regulations for 2025-2028, underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting energy efficiency within the corporate sector.
According to the Energy Administration Act, energy users with a contract capacity exceeding 800 kilowatts were required to conserve an average of 1 percent of electricity from 2015-2024. Based on statistics, such entities, which number around 4,900, achieved an average energy-saving rate of 1.46 percent, resulting in a reduction of 24.48 billion kilowatt-hours from 2015-2023, the MOEA said.
With the original regulations expiring at the end of 2024, the newly launched rules are expected to assist high electricity users in conserving an additional 9.47 billion kWh over the next four years.
The updated guidelines require companies to integrate internal resources and reduce energy consumption at all branch offices and campuses, the MOEA said, adding that individual company goals are based on their total contract capacity.
Additionally, a mandatory annual saving rate of 1.5 percent applies to all state-owned enterprises, the ministry added.
To facilitate implementation, the MOEA has established a comprehensive channel for evaluating energy efficiency. The ministry will also promote cooperation between high electricity consumers and energy and engineering service companies while providing financial and technological support to enterprises. (POC-E)
