MOENV launches circular economy textile alliance

An alliance was launched by the Ministry of Environment Resource Circulation Administration July 16, underscoring government commitment to implementing circular economy concepts in the textile industry.

The MOENV said the establishment was in response to Taiwan’s Pathway to Net-Zero Emissions in 2050, under which textiles are included as a major item within the key strategies of circular use of resources and zero waste, with a target recycling rate of 80%.

Through exchange and integration of the latest information on domestic and international textile recycling, the alliance aims to advance circular economy development in textiles. It has six goals of green design, circular procurement, sustainable consumption, smart sorting, regenerated fiber certification and industry innovation.

The alliance includes a comprehensive field of representatives with 66 members drawn from raw material production, brands, retailers, recycling businesses, the complete upstream, mid-stream and downstream of the industry supply chain, as well as academia and the government.

The event presented a sustainable fashion logo to members who joined a sustainable fashion alliance in accordance with circular textile guidelines for the chain brand apparel and retail industries to encourage brands and stores to recycle textiles. Benchmark companies were invited to share trends and challenges in textile circular economy, as well as practical experience in sustainable textile recycling.

Speaking at the launch, MOENV deputy minister Shen Chih-hsiu said that textiles are a global major industry, and responsible for 4% of greenhouse gas emissions. MOENV RCA director Lai Yin-yin said that the alliance would hold regular meetings or workshops as an exchange platform, solicit opinions about expectation and demand for textile recycling from all sectors, forge a supply chain network and set up exchange between business and the government to jointly facilitate the circulation and reuse of textiles.
