The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a press event Sept. 1 in Taipei City to outline the government’s plans to promote Taiwan’s participation in the U.N. mechanism ahead of the upcoming General Assembly.
The 81st U.N.G.A. will open Sept. 8 in New York City, with the general debate taking place Sept. 22-26 and following the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations that Delivers for All.”
Vice Foreign Minister Ger Bau-shuan said at the news conference that, as an important and responsible member of the international community, Taiwan needs to participate in relevant multilateral mechanisms to protect its national interests and the rights of its 23.5 million people.
Having accumulated abundant experience in addressing issues of common global concern and developed capabilities to do so effectively, Taiwan is willing to share its know-how and contribute expertise through the U.N. system and other multilateral mechanisms to jointly advance global welfare, he added.
Ger attributed Taiwan’s exclusion from the U.N. to China’s distortion of General Assembly Resolution 2758 and its false claim to representing Taiwan in the U.N. system. Beijing has continued to escalate its threatening behavior across the Taiwan Strait and in the Indo-Pacific, while its Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress implemented in July this year has caused great concern among members of the international community, he added.
The vice minister said Taiwan’s campaign this year focuses on three key aspects. First, the government will draw attention to the fact that U.N.G.A. resolution 2758 does not exclude Taiwan’s U.N. participation and urge the U.N. to identify appropriate ways to include Taiwan’s in its mechanism.
Secondly, the campaign will reaffirm Taiwan’s commitment to maintaining the status quo, thus ensuring peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, Ger said, adding that the third aim is to staunchly defend the international legal order and emphasize the peaceful settlement of disputes. (SFC-E)
