A workshop held to advance environmental and industrial cooperation with Taiwan’s allies and partners kicked off July 20 in Taipei City under the auspices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the MOFA, the “Co-Carbon Compass Workshop: Carbon Credit Collaboration and Capacity Building under the Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project” was organized by the state-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute.
In line with the government’s integrated diplomatic approach, the five-day event aims to explore a low-carbon sustainable future while showcasing Taiwan’s efforts to work with global partners to tackle climate change challenges, and involves ambassadors and senior officials from 11 allies, the ministry said.
During the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister François Chih-chung Wu said Taiwan is collaborating with allies on capacity building and enhancing resilience in global carbon credit trading and reduction in the spirit of the Paris Accord and global climate governance. Highlighting the country’s constructive role in addressing climate issues, Wu expressed hope that the event would lead to bilateral and multilateral consensus and greater capacity to address related issues.
While hosting a welcome reception for the workshop participants later the same day, Vice Minister Ger Bau-shuan said that through public-private and international collaboration, the government will help local firms expand their presence, connect with global counterparts and assist allies with their sustainable development, in line with the goals of its Diplomatic Allies Prosperity Project and the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Deputy Minister of Environment Hsieh Yein-rui said he looked forward to sharing Taiwan’s 2050 Net Zero Transition policy goals, carbon fee system and related experiences with workshop attendees, while ITRI Executive Vice President Lee Tzong-ming invited attendees to visit the Hsinchu County-based research institute to better understand Taiwan’s related technological developments and innovations.
