MOFA thanks UK, Sweden for backing cross-strait peace, stability

The recent strategic partnership signed by U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Swedish counterpart Ulf Kristersson supporting peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Oct. 14.

In the partnership declaration, the U.K. and Sweden recognized that the prosperity and security of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions are inextricably linked and stated their intention to bolster partnerships between Europe and the Indo-Pacific, including through the implementation of the EU and U.K.’s Indo-Pacific strategies.

Both countries will continue to cooperate closely on responding to China as a systemic challenge, the declaration said, adding that Sweden and the U.K. both reaffirm the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and throughout the wider Asia-Pacific.

According to the MOFA, both Sunak and Kristersson have publicly expressed support for maintaining the cross-strait status quo several times this year, including their Joint Leaders Statement issued June 19 in London. Taiwan’s government will continue to deepen collaboration with international democracies to jointly strengthen democratic resilience and unity while safeguarding regional security, the ministry added.
