The 2026 International Forum on Pet Industry-Pet Food Scientific Research and Innovation Ecosystem was held July 1-2 in Taipei City, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
Ten academia, government and industry experts from Europe, Japan, South Korea and the U.S. joined to explore future trends in the pet food industry, the MOA said. Scientific management and innovative research has produced a global pet product industry, with pet owners concerned for nutrition and health.
According to a survey conducted by the MOA in 2025, the number of pet cats and dogs in the country surpassed 3.2 million. The Taiwan Institute of Economic Research estimated that the industry market exceeds NT$80 billion (US$2.5 billion) with food accounting for 53 percent of market value.
The forum centered on three topics: nutritional standards development and establishment of scientific research; industry-academia-government collaboration on ingredient management; practical innovation and development trends. Representatives from European pet food industry body FEDIAF; Kansas State University; Japan Society of Pet Animal Nutrition; Mar. Inc; South Korea National Institute of Animal Science and National Taiwan University sharing experiences and in-depth analyses of international nutrition guidelines.
Following the two-day forum, the 2026 Pet Food Science Innovation and Industry Application Workshop was held July 3, with discussions on themes inclusive of sustainable ingredients, smart production and development, responsible pet nutrition, quality optimization, specialized processing methods and precision nutrition, the ministry added.
