President Lai Ching-te said the government will expand investment in smart medical technologies to stimulate biomedical innovation to counter the complex challenges of a super-aging society, climate extremes and the prevalence of chronic diseases.

According to the Presidential Office, the remarks were made at the opening ceremony of the 17th Asia-Pacific Forum of Medical Laboratory Science April 18 in Taichung City.

Lai first expressed gratitude to the Taichung City-based Taiwan Association of Medical Technologists for ongoing promotion of professional exchange and international cooperation. He then noted that the theme of this year’s conference was “Smart, Sustainable, and Resilient: Advancing Medical Laboratory Sciences in a New Era,” and described new technologies that make earlier detection of problems possible, thus providing patients with more precise care.

The president said for a successful transition from a treatment-centered mode to a prevention- and health facilitation-centered one, it is vital for the medical sector to leverage digital technology to construct a smart system capable of automatic warning and real-time responses.

Lai recognized medical technologists as a major pillar of the medical system for their work supporting infection control, public health and precision medicine. He called on those experts at the forum to work together toward medical sustainability to uphold the well-being of Taiwan’s people. (POC-E)
