President Lai Ching-te expressed hope of deepening cooperation with Japan to jointly uphold democracy and freedom and advance regional prosperity.

Lai made the remarks June 9 in a prerecorded video screened at the first edition of the Shinzo Abe and Modern Japan International Research Forum in Tokyo, which was themed “Abe’s Grand Strategy and the Taiwan-Japan Relationship as a Cornerstone of the Indo-Pacific.”

He thanked National Chengchi University’s Shinzo Abe Research Center for organizing the event and added that the center, established in 2025, is the world’s first research institute named after the former Japanese prime minister, the Presidential Office said.

The president lauded Abe as a political figure with a grand vision, adding that the free and open Indo-Pacific concept proposed by the former prime minister has had a huge impact on the region’s stability. He also expressed appreciation to Abe for urging the international community to prioritize peace in the Taiwan Strait.

Taiwan and Japan are both situated in the first island chain and thus face the same security challenges, Lai said. With the support of Abe and the guests at the forum, the two countries’ partnership has continued to advance, laying a solid foundation for peace in East Asia, he added.

Lai took the opportunity to thank the incumbent Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for repeatedly stressing the importance of maintaining cross-strait stability and praised her proposal of an upgraded FOIP strategy advocating enhanced economic security, strengthened security guarantees and reinforced cooperation with democratic partners.

The president concluded by citing the inking of a bilateral digital trade cooperation agreement in December 2025, which marked a new milestone in mutual digital economy and supply chain integration. (POC-E)
