President Lai Ching-te met with a delegation led by Guatemalan Congress President Luis Alberto Contreras Colíndres at the Presidential Office July 8 in Taipei City and anticipated enhanced partnership between the allies to promote mutual prosperity and progress.

Lai said Taiwan-Guatemala relations have continued positive forward momentum over recent years, especially in the areas of medical care, industrial development and trade. In particular, Lai said he and President Bernardo Aréval concluded a letter of intent to expand semiconductor cooperation during the latter’s visit in June last year.

In addition to semiconductor cooperation, Lai said the two allies have also expanded bilateral trade, as evidenced by the US$130 million in annual exports from Guatemala to Taiwan for two years in a row, making it the leading supplier of cane sugar and fourth largest supplier of coffee to Taiwan.

The president thanked Contreras for signing a resolution calling for Taiwan’s inclusion of the World Health Organization, as well as for strong congressional support for Taiwan’s participation in international bodies. The government encourages domestic firms to enjoy Guatemala’s many strategic strengths as they seek to expand a presence in American markets.

In response, Contreras said Guatemala has always been a loyal friend to Taiwan and anticipated an ever-more beneficial long term bond. He praised Taiwan as an inspiring example in terms of social development, technological innovation and economic growth.

On behalf of Guatemala, Contreras thanked the government of Taiwan for its assistance, especially in modernizing the Congress through various cooperative projects. He also reiterated congressional support for expanding partnership with Taiwan, and commended the country’s success in economic, social and democratic development. (SFC-E)
