President Lai Ching-te said Aug. 11 that Taiwan is committed to deepening cooperation with St. Vincent and the Grenadines across the board and enhancing the welfare of the people on both sides through diverse projects.
Lai made the remarks while receiving Godwin Friday, the ally’s prime minister, at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. He thanked Friday for choosing Taiwan as his first destination outside the Caribbean since taking office last November.
The president expressed appreciation to Friday and the St. Vincent and the Grenadines government for their firm support of Taiwan’s international participation. He cited the prime minister’s letter to World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus backing Taiwan’s engagement in the World Health Assembly in May.
Lauding the 45 years of official diplomatic ties, Lai said Taiwan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines will continue to support each other and launch mutually beneficial cooperative projects. He added that the Taiwan Global Pathfinders Initiative and its Diplomatic Allies Inbound Track program launched last year have been attracting young people from both sides to engage in exchanges spanning smart agriculture and sustainable tourism.
Lai said he was pleased to hear of Friday’s recognition of Taiwan’s smart agriculture initiative in the St. Vincent and the Grenadines agricultural community of Orange Hill. Fresh produce and other high-quality agricultural products grown there by young farmers are increasingly popular with local hotels and tourism operators, creating business opportunities and encouraging more young people to pursue careers in agriculture, he said.
The president expressed hope that more young people from both sides would visit each other’s countries for study and exchange, enabling the next generation to work together to strengthen the allies’ enduring friendship.
In response, Friday said his administration is ready to further strengthen bilateral ties, noting that the two governments are negotiating an economic cooperation agreement to boost bilateral trade and continuing to advance initiatives such as arrangements for the mutual recognition of driver’s licenses. He added that he looks forward to more exchanges among young people, professionals, businesses and institutions to strengthen long-term ties.
Following the meeting, Lai and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim hosted a state banquet for the prime minister and pledged to work with the ally to contribute to global peace, prosperity and sustainability. (YCH-E)
