President Lai Ching-te said he looks forward to building closer ties with Canada in areas spanning the aerospace industry, artificial intelligence, key minerals, renewable energy, semiconductors and supply chain security.
Lai made the remarks while receiving a delegation led by Yves-François Blanchet, head of Canada’s Bloc Québécois party, Sept. 8 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. Other prominent guests included Members of Parliament Christine Normandin, Patrick Bonin and Sébastien Lemire, as well as Marie-Louise Hannan, head of the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, the PO said.
In his remarks, the president noted that the trip marks Blanchet’s first visit to Taiwan and the first time party representatives have visited the country. He added that he is deeply grateful for Bloc Québécois members in the Canadian House of Commons proposing a motion to counter China’s distortion of U.N. Resolution 2758 in November 2024 and for Blanchet openly urging the Canadian government to expedite the signing of the Trade Cooperation Framework Arrangement in February this year.
Lai went on to emphasize that Taiwan boasts the world’s most advanced semiconductor industry and information and communications technologies, while Quebec is a major aerospace industry hub and Montreal is an international center of AI research. Taichung City-headquartered Aerospace Industrial Development Corp. has been collaborating with Montreal-based Bombardier Inc. for over 20 years, the president added, anticipating continued close cooperation between Taiwan and the Canadian province.
In response, Blanchet said Taiwan has the right to participate in major international organizations and trade agreements such as the International Civil Aviation Organization, World Health Organization and Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.
The party leader highlighted Taiwan’s vibrant economy and critical role in supply chains and global prosperity. He vowed that Bloc Québécois will continue speaking up for Taiwan in the Canadian Parliament and calling on the Canadian government to sign the TCFA with Taiwan. (POC-E)
