President Lai Ching-te said July 21 that Taiwan is committed to deepening cooperation with democracies like Poland to jointly address authoritarian expansion and other challenges.
Lai made the remarks when meeting with a European Parliament delegation comprising Polish members of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The delegation is led by Beata Szydło, former Polish prime minister and current member of the EP’s Special Committee on the European Democracy Shield.
The EP adopted numerous Taiwan-friendly resolutions and reports this year, including measures to strengthen Taiwan-EU cooperation on drone technology, support Taiwan’s international participation, deepen Taiwan-EU partnerships and reaffirm the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, Lai said. The parliament also called on China to repeal the Law on Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress in April and adopted a resolution countering Beijing’s transnational repression last month, he added.
According to Lai, these actions demonstrate the EU’s firm commitment to the universal values of democracy and respect for human rights, as well as its support for Taiwan. Taiwan firmly believes that only through cooperation among like-minded partners to strengthen democratic resilience can regional and global peace and stability be safeguarded, he said.
Taiwan and Poland are highly complementary in key sectors such as artificial intelligence, drones, green energy and semiconductors, Lai said, citing a cooperative memorandum of understanding on industrial innovation and R&D signed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Poland’s National Centre for Research and Development last month. He added that he looks forward to the two sides’ continued R&D cooperation and market expansion to build a safer and more resilient democratic supply chain.
In response, Szydło described Taiwan as a trusted European partner. She praised Taiwan’s achievements in AI, semiconductors and emerging technologies and expressed her hope that Taiwan-Poland economic and trade ties will continue to grow.
Szydło said any disputes across the Taiwan Strait must be peacefully resolved. She added that the EU should strengthen collaboration with trusted democracies like Taiwan and expressed hope that the Taiwan-Europe relationship would continue to develop in a pragmatic, open and long-term manner.
