Taiwan pledges support for Ukraine medical facility renovation

A memorandum of understanding was inked Dec. 27 for financial support to renovate a medical building at the Unbroken National Rehabilitation Center in Lviv City, Ukraine.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MOU was signed by Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyy in Taipei City and Corina Hu, Taiwan’s deputy representative to Poland, via videoconference, with Deputy Foreign Minister François Chihchung Wu as witness during a ceremony in Taipei.

Wu said Lviv is the largest city in western Ukraine, a major hub for international humanitarian aid and a center for treating soldiers and civilian patients since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out in early 2022. When completed, the renovated facility will be named Taiwan Friendship Building to underscore the government’s commitment to solidarity with the East European country, he added.

In response, Sadovyy briefed Wu on the rehabilitation center’s operations. He expected the building to benefit more patients and offered sincere appreciation to the government and people of Taiwan for their help in a time of crisis.

The MOFA said the center has treated over 940,000 patients so far. The seven-floor renovated building will offer physical therapy, psychological counseling and prosthetic limb service.

Earlier in the day, Sadovyy and a delegation were hosted by Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung in a luncheon in Taipei, where they discussed the ongoing war and ways to expand bilateral exchanges and strengthen urban resilience, among other key issues. (SFC-E)
