President Lai Ching-te attended a reception Aug. 12 to celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines and called on the youth of both countries to participate in bilateral cooperations that advance the alliance.
Lai welcomed Prime Minister Godwin Friday of St. Vincent and the Grenadines and described the visit as a demonstration of the strong friendship between the two countries. He added that the world has faced many new challenges over the past 45 years, but Taiwan and St. Vincent and the Grenadines have always supported each other and upheld the spirit of mutual trust and benefit, citing the establishment of the Arnos Vale Acute Care Hospital and the implementation of young farmer training programs and livestock industry development programs as examples.
The president went on to say that no country can face global challenges on the order of growing authoritarian expansion and climate change alone, adding that democracies must unite to build a close-connected international network to safeguard global democracy, peace and prosperity.
Lai noted Ambassador Kenton X. Chance, who was born at the beginning of the allies’ relationship and took office earlier this year at 45 years old, studied in Taiwan in 2006 and witnessed educational cooperation between the two countries and the continuous friendship among generations of young people on both sides. The president told Vincentian students in attendance that he hopes to see more young people involve themselves in the two countries’ diplomatic relationship to ensure its longevity. (YCH-E)
