Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim stressed the vital importance of advancing environmental stability amid the current energy crisis, geopolitical fluctuations and extreme climate events.

Hsiao made the remarks while attending the opening ceremony of the Earth Solutions 2026 Sustainability Design Action Summit April 21 in Taipei City, on the eve of Earth Day. The two-day event echoed the U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Presidential Office said.

The vice president pointed out that despite facing external pressure and weathering earthquakes, typhoons, and the Covid-19 pandemic in recent decades, Taiwan has never yielded, demonstrating flexibility and unwavering resilience in critical moments.

President Lai Ching-te has launched the Whole-of-Society Defense Resilience Committee, Healthy Taiwan Promotion Committee and National Climate Change Response Committee, Hsiao noted. The three causes are closely intertwined and require public-private collaboration to reinforce energy, health care, infrastructure and national security, she said, adding that sustainability also can only be achieved through the joint efforts of the academic, civic, governmental and industrial sectors.

Citing the government’s launch of a carbon pricing system in 2025 as part of the country’s second energy transition, the vice president said Taiwan is a reliable partner in forging a sustainable world.

Taiwan must leverage technology like artificial intelligence to simultaneously propel digital and net-zero transformations, address social challenges and build a more hopeful future for the next generation, Hsiao concluded. (POC-E)
