Five Indian students die in passenger van crash near Canada’s Toronto

The students were heading west in a passenger van on Saturday morning when a car collided with a tractor trailer.

Five Indian students were killed in an accident involving a bakkie and a tractor trailer near Toronto on Saturday, the Indian High Commission in Canada said. Two other passengers were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

According to local media reports, police said Harpreet Singh, 24, Jaspinder Singh, 21, Karanpal Singh, 22, Mohit Chouhan, 23, and Pawan Kumar, 23, were pronounced dead at the scene. They all studied in Montreal and in the Greater Toronto area.

Indian Ambassador Ajay Bisaria wrote on Twitter: “Tragic tragedy in Canada: Five Indian students died in a car accident near Toronto on Saturday. Two others at the hospital. Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of the deceased. The @ IndiainToronto team contacted friends of the victims for help. ”

“Great comfort to families,” replied TS Tirumurti, the UN Permanent Representative to India.

The students were heading west in a passenger van on Saturday morning when a car collided with a tractor trailer. Police said an investigation into the accident was ongoing and no case had been opened.
